Description
„Lino mūza‘s“ dresses are decorated with archeological style sashes, twisted with the help of blocks, called „Grass-snake sashes“.
„Grass-snake sashes“ are woven by repeating an archaic process of twisted weaving, which is considered to be the oldest known method of weaving. From long ago in this way of weaving quadrangular blocks made of wood, stone or ceramics are used. Manipulating with their fingers weavers twist blocks in different directions and thus the „music“ of various patterns and signs is born in the sash.
A grass-snake is an inseparable part of mythology of ancient Lithuanians, when it was considered to be an intermediary between gods and people. Even today you can see it twisted in sashes. Our weaver especially likes this symbol and while weaving different threads of yarn into matching patterns, does not forget to weave in warm wishes and bright thoughts for the future owner of the sash.
Twisted sashes are known world-wide. In Lithuanian culture, besides its practical use (as a rope, band, belt to gird up a garment, or to tie up a married woman’s headdress), had also a symbolic meaning. It is believed that tying an object with a sash protects against „evil powers“. Sashes and bands were used to engird various ritual presents: at baptisms, weddings, funerals. Giving a sash meant closeness, sympathy, friendship.
Our twisted sashes are not an archeological reconstruction.
Sash ornaments are like an example of a unique ancient pattern.
By pressing these signs into a sash wishes and greetings were coded.
People who knew that could read them.
Twisted sashes are like a completed work of art. They charm us by their simplicity and perfection.
